In 1987 (then Hummingbird Productions) created for BBC Television the ground breaking and National Primetime Emmy award winning series Bringing It All Back Home the story of Irish Music and America.
Since then, South Wind Blows have continued to produce and direct film, television and cultural events such as Ceiliúradh at the Royal Albert Hall, commissioned by President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, Glaoch: A President’s Call, filmed in Aras An Uachtaráin, Notre Dame: A Welcome Home, The Gloaming: Moment to Moment, Gabriel Byrne: Stories from Home, Pat Collins directed films Henry Glassie: Film Work, The Dance RTÉ’s The Heart of Saturday Night and of course Other Voices.
For the past 21 years, Other Voices has brought musicians and artists from across the world to Dingle, West Kerry, to raise their voices to sing. Since the very first intimate gathering in 2001 to the current weekend-long festival of music, song and storytelling across dozens of venues including the tiny Church of St James, Other Voices is now an established fixture in the Irish music calendar; a ‘must attend’ event for performers and audiences alike. Its Dingle edition has evolved year after year and now boasts a number of unique and exciting happenings including its ideas wing Ireland’s Edge, Cogar, the festival’s Irish language stand component, a West Kerry edition of Jim Carroll’s Banter and more.
As an international music TV Series, a festival, and a tourism event in its own right, Other Voices celebrates the local on a global scale and has travelled from its home base in West Kerry to Austin, London, Belfast New York, Cardigan North Wales and Berlin, creating partnerships and relationships that endure, grow and flourish.

Other Voices – Series 1 to 21 – Twenty One series’ of the popular music show shot in St. James Church in Dingle. Each year presnters Annie Macmanus, Huw Stephens and MayKay are joined by a number of Irish and international artists. Over 200 artists have preformed at Other Voices including Paolo Nutini, Amy Winehouse, Hozier, Ellie Goulding. Mumford & Sons, St. Vincent, The XX, The National, Little Simz, Willie Nelson, Conor Oberst, Florence + The Machine, Gregory Porter, Jessie Ware. Sinead O’Connor, Sigrid, Laura Marling, Arlo Parks, Sam Fender, Christy Moore, Loyle Carner, Jarvis Cocker, Laura Mvula, Snow Patrol, Villagers, Lisa Hannigan, The Gloaming, Lankum, Gilla Band (Formerly Girl Band), Rufus Wainwright, Dermot Kennedy and many more. Ireland’s Edge IRELAND’S EDGE, born in 2015, emerged to explore Ireland’s future in a changing global landscape. Its mission revolves around fostering collaboration and discussion to enrich collective knowledge, with culture, creativity, and community at our core. The name reflects our unique location in Dingle, perched on Ireland’s Edge, and symbolizes the nation’s growth in culture, technology, education, and economics. As the ‘ideas wing’ of Other Voices, Ireland’s Edge have hosted diverse events from diplomatic discussions to pagan gatherings. Now in its eighth year, IRELAND’S EDGE unites leading voices across disciplines, offering insightful perspectives on society, culture, art, science, and technology. (2015 – 2022)
THE DANCE
The Dance is an observational feature documentary that follows the staging of MÁM from the first day of rehearsal to the opening night performance at the Dublin Theatre Festival in 2019.The film is a fiercely true and beautiful account of the process of creativity and collaboration, brought to life by the great Pat Collins (Song of Granite, Silence)(2021)
Henry Glassie: Field Work Henry Glassie: Field Work from Director Pat Collins is a portrait of the celebrated folklorist and ethnologist Henry Glassie. Inspired by and featuring Glassie – ‘Field Work’, is an immersive and meditative film set among the rituals and rhythms of working artists in Brazil, Turkey, North Carolina and Ireland. The film displays the director’s trademark eye for details and the process of the artist’s work is awe-inspiring. Glassie’s subject is folklore and art but his deep abiding love for the people who create it resonates throughout the film. “I don’t study people” Glassie says, “I stand with people and I study the things they create.” Artists like the sculptor Edival Rosas from Salvador in Brazil describe their practice as one where body and spirit are integrated, where in Glassie’s words the creative act brings “a momentary fulfilment of what it is to be human”. Keepers of the Flame – currently in production on this feature length documentary film which focuses on the human stories contained within the Military Service Pension Collection relating to the aftermath and legacy of the 1916 Rising. (2017)
Other Voices – Electric Picnic & Latitude – The popular festival has expanded to host a stage at both the Latitude Festival in the UK and Electric Picnic in Ireland (2014 – 2016)
Ceiliuradh – a live event in the Royal Albert Hall for the President’s historic visit to London. The event, presented by Dermot O’Leary, celebrated the music, dance, literature, art and culture of both the UK and Ireland, with performances from Fiona Shaw, Joseph O’Connor, Olivia O’Leary, Donal Lunny, Andy Irvine, The Gloaming, Conor O’Brien (Villagers), Glen Hansard, Imelda May, Paul Brady, Elvis Costello, The Band of The Irish Guards, The Band of The Irish Army and a massed choir drawn from London-Irish emigrant groups. Other Voices Derry-London – For the 11th year Other Voices travelled north to Derry and east to London to host weekends of music, talks and event all culminating in a series for broadcast. Other Voices returned to Derry in its 12th year. Artists included Laura Marling, Dexy’s, Laura Mvula, Marina & the Diamonds, Paul Buchanan, Villagers and Little Green Cars amongst others. (2013/2014)
Gloach The Presidents Call – At the President’s invitation, some of Ireland’s and the world’s renowned writers, musicians and singers, as well as emerging artists, gathered at the home of the President of Ireland to make a special programme dedicated to Irish people worldwide. (2013)
Notre Dame A Welcome Home – a large scale concert production in the O2 to celebrate the connections between Notre Dame University and Ireland, in addition to the audience present of 10,000 it was streamed and televised live to an international audience of 5 million. (2012)
Silence – A fictional feature film with a documentary sensibility at its heart ‘Silence’ is a film of exceptional quality. It is a new and innovative style of Irish film drama, using real people rather than actors and using real locations and documentary elements in a creative and imaginative way. (2011/2012)
Other Voices NYC – a documentary film that charts the journey of seminal music TV series Other Voices, from its home on the Dingle peninsula to the heart of the East Village in New York City in October 2011 for a special two day gathering of Irish and international musicians and writers. (2011)
Windows on the World – an audio visual package of the best of Irish music for the Irish Pavillion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 (2010)
Limits of Liberty – a unique history series of 20th Century Ireland presented and co-written by one of Ireland’s foremost historians, Diarmaid Ferriter. 3 x 52 mins broadcast on RTE in 2010. (2010)
Gabriel Bryne: Stories from Home – is a revealing and evocative insight into Byrne’s life and creative impulse. Blending home movie films and contemporary footage, it’s an intimate profile, emanating from the man himself and giving the viewer a rare insight into Byrne’s private and public world. The Full Set – Series 1 to 3 – a series of Irish traditional music first presented by Daithi Ó Sé and then Maired Ni Mhaonaigh of Altan fame. The series features some of the finest duet combinations playing Irish music today. (2006 to 2008)
A Christmas Celebration with Eimear Quinn – A one hour special film for Christmas which explores sacred music, its role and its evolution. Presented, performances and arrangements by Eimear Quinn (2008)
Moving Hearts Live – recorded at Dublin’s Vicar Street during the Moving Hearts sold out reunion performance this DVD captures some of Ireland’s finest instrumentalists at the very top of their collective game. (2007)

Donal Lunny – Follow the Music – an intimate portrait of the artist, the man and his music, his early life in Newbridge, the son of a native Irish speaking mother and Northern Irish father and his early realisation that traditional music would be the source and inspiration of his life as a creative artist. Nigel Kennedy in Dingle – This documentary shot during Nigel Kennedy’s visit to the Dingle peninsula in July 2003 as part of his tour with the Irish Chamber Orchestra gives us a unique insight into the man himself. (2003)
Nigel Kennedy Live in Concert – In this programme shot in the beautiful St. Mary’s Church in Dingle, Co. Kerry on the last night of a nationwide tour with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Kennedy doubles as director and soloist in a programme of Bach concertos which also features Fionnuala Hunt, violin and Cork born oboist Aisling Casey. The Raw Bar – The ‘Raw Bar ‘is that elusive, pure and indefinable essence of traditional music which offers no easy definition but which is unmistakable when experienced. Presented well known traditional musician Dermot Mc Laughlin ‘The Raw Bar’ ask the questions: What does it mean to be a traditional musician in Ireland in 2003? (2003)
The Song of Hearts Desire – documents a profound and dynamic exchange between a great tradition and a great singer. The sean-nós tradition (literally Gaelic for “old style”) is the oldest living tradition in Irish music culture and this is Sinéad O’Connor’s personal and musical homage to that tradition. (2002)
Sinéad O’Connor Live at Vicar Street Dublin – Shot in Vicar Street at the end of Sinéad O’Connor’s first Irish tour in six years, this concert film captures one of Sinéad O’Connor’s most compelling performances. (2002)
Freedom Highway – 90 min feature documentary which takes the viewer on a journey through the great political songs of time using a combination of contemporary and archive footage and featuring performances and interviews with political singers and activists alike including Tom Waits, Pete Seeger, Ani DiFranco, Blind Boys of Alabama, Elvis Costello and Emmylou Harris. Keeping Time – a performance led, made for tv film, featuring the poetry of Seamus Heaney and the piping of Liam O’Flynn. It marks Heaney’s sixtieth birthday and celebrates the longstanding relationship between these two artists and their respective traditions. (1999)
Sruth na Maoile – Hummingbird produced this 6 x 30min series for BBC Scotland and TnaG during 1999. The series explores the relationship between song and music in the Scot and Irish traditions. (1999)
Heritage des Celtes – a concert film shot in Le Zenith in Paris which brings together 70 of the finest musicians and singers from Brittany, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Galicia in a celebration of the spirit and the diversity of Celtic Music. It was transmitted live by TnaG and was also transmitted at a later date by S4C and BBC Scotland. (1998)
Laoi na Píbe / The Piper’s Call – a 1 x 1 hour documentary film. This film is a portrait of an outstanding Irish musician, the uilleann piper, Liam O’Flynn. A Hummingbird Production for TnaG in association with RTE and Tara Music Company Ltd. (1998)
East meets West – an hour long documentary which reveals the creative impetus behind the Guinness Global Gathering, a gig which brought together the Japanese taiko drumming ensemble KODO and Donal Lunny’s contemporary trad band COOLFIN. Because It’s a Lonely World – a one hour documentary celebrating the collaboration of two musical giants, Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach and their acclaimed album “Painted from Memory”. (1998)
Ceolta Nollag Ó Chorca Dhuibhne – an hour long film featuring a performance of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” by the acclaimed Irish Chamber Orchestra. The film was recorded in St. Mary’s Church in Dingle during December 1998 and also features special guest, traditional singer Áine Uí Cheallaigh. (1998)

Blath Gach Geag da dTig – a young sean nós singer from Donegal, Lillis Ó Laoire, leads us into the world of the traditional singer and draws us back to the source of tradition. He describes his own vital connection to that song source on the mainland of Donegal and on the island of Tory. This 1 x 1 hour film documents the way in which singers today make space for this tradition in the contemporary world. (1997)

Bringing it All Back Home – Emmy Award winning 5 x 1 hour documentary series, that traces the influence of Irish music and explores the way in which that music has influenced American rock country and folk music traditions. It was commissioned by the BBC and RTE for almost £1 million and received international critical acclaim, when it was first screened in 1991.
